Unfitted Finite Element Methods Using Bulk Meshes for Surface Partial Differential Equations
In this paper, we define new unfitted finite element methods for numerically approximating the solution of surface partial differential equations using bulk finite elements. The key idea is that the n-dimensional hypersurface, Γ ⊂ Rn+1, is embedded in a polyhedral domain in Rn+1 consisting of a union, Th, of (n+ 1)-simplices. The unifying feature of the methodological approach is that the finit...
متن کاملOptimal order finite element approximation for a hyperbolic integro-differential equation
Semidiscrete finite element approximation of a hyperbolic type integro-differential equation is studied. The model problem is treated as the wave equation which is perturbed with a memory term. Stability estimates are obtained for a slightly more general problem. These, based on energy method, are used to prove optimal order a priori error estimates.
متن کاملFinite Element Methods for Convection Diffusion Equation
This paper deals with the finite element solution of the convection diffusion equation in one and two dimensions. Two main techniques are adopted and compared. The first one includes Petrov-Galerkin based on Lagrangian tensor product elements in conjunction with streamlined upwinding. The second approach represents Bubnov/Petrov-Galerkin schemes based on a new group of exponential elements. It ...
متن کاملA cut finite element method for coupled bulk-surface problems on time-dependent domains
In this contribution we present a new computational method for coupled bulk-surface problems on time-dependent domains. The method is based on a space-time formulation using discontinuous piecewise linear elements in time and continuous piecewise linear elements in space on a fixed background mesh. The domain is represented using a piecewise linear level set function on the background mesh and ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Trace Finite Element Methods for Surface Partial Differential Equations
In this paper we consider two variants of a trace finite element method for solving elliptic partial differential equations on a stationary smooth manifold Γ. A discretization error analysis for both methods in one general framework is presented. Higher order finite elements are treated and rather general numerical approximations Γh of the manifold Γ are allowed. Optimal order discretization er...
